The 1999 ban on nuclear power in Australia was irrational and ill-advised. It's time to remove the prohibition.
The safety statistics over more than 60 years in the western world show that nuclear power has zero deaths per trillion kilowatt-hours of operation.
Nuclear power is the safest form of energy known to humankind.
Power plants that generate nuclear power emit no pollutants - no particulate matter, no carbon dioxide, nor any other harmful substance.
Nuclear power is the cleanest source of energy known to humankind.
Another great advantage of nuclear power is that the fuel is truly renewable. Britain, France, Russia, India, and China have all been recycling their spent nuclear fuel for decades. Using readily available, proven methods, 97% of spent nuclear fuel can be reprocessed and reused.
Nuclear power is the most renewable form of energy known to humankind.
Nuclear energy has by far the highest capacity factor of any other energy source. Nuclear power plants are producing maximum power more than 93% of the time during the year. That’s about 1.5 to 2 times more than natural gas and coal units, and 2.5 to 3.5 times more reliable than wind and solar plants.
Nuclear power is by far the most reliable form of energy production known to humankind.
Australia has some of the richest deposits of uranium in the world. Isn't it irrational that while we export uranium around the world, enabling other countries to enjoy safe, clean, and reliable energy, we are legally prohibited from producing nuclear power?

Cheap, reliable energy is the foundation of a strong economy and rising standard of living. In Australia, however, energy is exorbitantly expensive and increasingly unreliable.
Australia is the only country in the world that denies itself the option of nuclear power to meet its energy needs, via a Commonwealth prohibition on constructing nuclear power stations legislated in 1999.
All over the world nations are embracing nuclear power as an energy solution, for its:
- Energy density and reliability, which far exceed other renewable alternatives;
- Cleanness, including zero emissions, for which the European Union has declared nuclear power a “green” energy;
- Technological progress in new standards of safety, and of waste management, including reprocessing waste into more fuel.
There are 447 nuclear power plants in 32 nations, and dozens more under construction. Many use uranium from Australia, as we are a major exporter with one-third of the world’s known reserves, and bountiful reserves of thorium. It’s time Australians had the right to also enjoy the benefits of our own resources. Having the safest, cleanest, and most reliable source of electricity is a vital necessity for our nation.
We therefore ask the House to immediately:
Amend the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 to repeal the prohibition on nuclear power.
