Urgent plea to save Australia’s post offices
It’s do or die for post offices!
The current Senate inquiry into Australia Post’s retail network could be our last chance to save Australia’s post office network and the essential services they provide all communities.
Since the current CEO took over in 2021, he has closed almost 250 post offices, reducing the number from 4,330 to 4,082. He says he plans to reduce the total to 4,000, which is the minimum he has to maintain by law. But he’s also changing the format of post offices, from full-service shops to parcels agents with none of the services, and they will count towards the minimum.
If not stopped, his executives will gut the postal network to turn Australia Post into a parcels company, pocket their multi-million dollar bonuses, and ride off into the sunset while hundreds if not thousands of Australian towns and suburbs won’t have a post office anymore.
The real problem is that the politicians in Canberra are allowing them to do it. The Australian people own Australia Post, and we are represented by two Shareholder Ministers, who have the power to order the board to stop it, but they aren’t. That’s why the Citizens Party is fighting this campaign. We have to put maximum pressure on the government to stop this from happening. The current Senate inquiry is an opportunity to do that.

This petition of concerned Australians draws to the attention of the House that:
Since 2021, Australia Post CEO Paul Graham and his executive team—the highest-paid public employees in the country—have closed more than 220 post offices (from 4,320 to less than 4,100). They plan to reduce the network to the legal minimum of 4,000 and are lobbying to lower that minimum so they can close thousands more. They are also redefining outlets to include parcel lockers and converting full-service post offices into mere parcels agents.
This agenda harms millions of Australians in thousands of communities who depend on post offices for essential face-to-face services: postal, banking and cash (Bank@Post), identity verification, bill paying and more—especially as banks close branches. It also damages the thousands of licensees who own and operate more than two-thirds of post offices as small businesses now going backwards.
Australia Post is owned by the Australian people through the Government’s shareholder Ministers for Finance and Communications. By allowing this destruction of the network, the Government is responsible for the harm.
We therefore ask the House to:
